History:
Darling Harbour gets its name from, Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling who was the Governor of New South Wales from 1825-1831. When the Great depression hit, in the 1930's the east part of Darling Harbour became know at "The Hungry Mile" because of many people walking the harbour searching for jobs on the wharves. The Darling Harbour was used for transport, through rail ways and roads and marketing until the 1980's, when the government thought that the rail centre should be moved and the Harbour used for other purposes. This led to the redevelopment of Darling Harbour.
By the 1970's Darling Harbour was nothing but empty warehouses and unused train tracks, the wonderful waterfront view of Darling Harbour adjacent to the city needed to be redeveloped. In 1984, the government announced the redevelopment of the area and it led to a decision to "Return it to the people of Sydney after 150 years of Industrial use"-said by the NSW state premiere Neville Wran. Darling harbour then started contrustion with new buildings being built and the redevelopment of the whole city was under way, finally in 1988 Darling Harbour was re-opened. It won many construction and tourism industry awards after its redevelopment.
The Darling Harbour still remains the same today with a few added buildings and apartments.

Urban Consolidation:
During the 1980's the government started to redevelop the Darling Harbour area due to the unused trains and building industries, the government wanted to change the Darling Harbour into a tourist attraction and a place for the "people", which led to the buildings of high-rise apartment complexes and places for tourism. The sudden change from the government was because the Harbour was used for industrial use for over 150 years and they wanted to return it to the people. The population of The darling harbour increased dramatically after the redevelopment, because of the new apartments and because of its wonderful waterfront view of the adjacent city.
