Urban Sprawl: The creation of new low-density suburbs on the fringe or outer edges of a city.
History:
The Riverstone region settled in 1788 and in 1803 farming was established in Riverstone, because of the good grassing and the never ending water supply. In 1810 Lieut-Col Maurice Charles O'Connell was given 2500 acres in the Riverstone area and called it "Riverston Farm". At first Riverstone didnt have an "e" on the end until in 1860's on railway timetables, someone done a spelling mistake, the people then just stuck with the name as Rverstone instead of Riverston. Originally Beaf cattle farming was producted at Riverstone, which then was moved overland to the Hawkesbury River, to be transported to the convict settlement in the Sydney cove. Meat works were developed in 1878 which went under construction various times for rebuildment and expansion and was officially closed in 1992. After Maurice Charles O'Connell died his properties were subdivided and solf off, streets were laid out and they were named after London famous streets. Railways, churches and other buildings and infrastructures were also build. In 1988, the government set a program to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the European settlement in Australia, a museum was established for Riverstones European settlement. The suburb was small, until the beginning of the 21st century when housing boomed and infrastructure was the go, which made it a part of Urban sprawl. Farming and market Gardening are still very important activities in the local area of Riverstone.
