Urban decline: In Pyrmont
Urban Decline is the process in which buildings and infrastructures, in urban areas become old, misused and broken or deteriorated. The buildings close and the use of the land declines.
History of the Suburb:
Pyrmont was established in 1795. Pyrmont was famously known for its site of sandstone quarries, Charles Saunders became the biggest quarrymaster with three quarries established in his name in 1853. The quarry worked was pasted down from generation to generation, from him to his son and so on until 1931. The sandstone's were used for most of the important buildings in Sydney. There is also a street named Saunders street, named after Charles Saunders and his family. Churches and chapels were built in 1864, too expand there culture and the chapel is still used today. Pyrmont qucikly became a working class community with the growing culture and community with 30,000 people living in Pyrmont and sugar refinery was opened in 1900.
As sydney started to grow so did Pyrmont, prymont was providing resources for the city to grow with new infrastructure and building employment, attracting the Blue-Collar workers. During the World War in 1939-1945, it changed pyrmont completely because now pyrmont had to hold and handle war supplies and the work turned to the war instead of in the buildings and infrastructures, so manufacturing started to move to suburbs around pyrmont. By the 70's the infrastructure and industries in Pyrmont where almost all gone, this was due to Port Botany opening bigger and better industries, attracting employment from Pyrmont. By 1981 the population had now dropped to 1590, the government then began a program of redevelopment in the area, new buildings were built in 1999.
Urban decline:
During the 1950's the infrastructures and industries started to relocate in other areas of the city. In the 1970's the Pyrmont-Ultimo area had lost pretty much all its character, because of the other suburbs building bigger, newer and better facilities. Because of this many of the Pyrmont workers and their families left Pyrmont to go find better work in other suburbs, the bosses and wokers left so the building's that were left became old and unused. This caused decay in the Pyrmont area, no one was taking care of the buildings, the buildings then became abandoned.
